Participating schools visiting in October

On the 31st of October 2011 we welcomed Miss Jenny Tipton's Year 11 Spanish class from Queen Elizabeth's High School (Gainsborough) who had gotten up very early to make the long bus journey from Lincolnshire.

We completed a range of language learning activities both inside our state-of-the-art facilities and outside on the lawn. These included:

• a Taster Session in Chinese language and culture with Ally Yang.

• a Spanish Grammar & Vocab Session with Cecilia Monroe.

• an introduction to Interpreting and demonstration of Simultaneous Interpreting in our Digital Interpreting Suites.

• a Q & A session with current undergraduate students about University Life

• an afternoon session of Computer Aided Language Learning and video creation in one of our Digital Language Labs.

• a session on Business Spanish with Nuría Lopez.

• a session on 'Why Study Spanish & Other Languages in post-16 Education'.

Our staff (Thomas Snell, Gloria Alvarez, Nuría Lopez, Andrew Simpson and Ally Yang) worked closely with with the Queen Elizabeth's High School Pupils throughout the day. The visiting pupils were also closely supported and guided by our Student Team: Kerryanne Higgens, Sarah Ward, Maria López Vicente, and María Ruiz-Melgarejo Rubio

Participating schools visiting in September

60 pupils from Nunthorpe School (Middlesbrough) joined us over two days for French activities on the 28th of September 2011 and German activities on the 29th of September 2011.

The programme included:

• Taster Sessions in Portuguese language and culture with Fatima Taborda.

• Taster Sessions in Chinese language and culture with Ally Yang.

• Taster Sessions in Spanish language and culture with Cecilia Monroe.

• Campus Tours in the target languages (French/German) covering the class’ recent vocabulary and grammar topics.

• an introduction to Simultaneous Interpreting and group oral/interpreting exercises in one of our Digital Interpreting Suites.

• Q & A sessions with current undergraduate students about University Life and studying languages

• Computer Aided Language Learning sessions and video creation in one of our Digital Language Labs.

Participating schools visiting in July

On the 18th of July 2011 we were joined by Mr. Andrew Norton's Year 8 French class from St. Aiden's CoE Academy in Darlington.

Activities undertake included:

• a Taster Session in Chinese language and culture with Haoxiongyi Mei.

• a Taster Session in Spanish language and culture with Cecilia Monroe.

• a Campus Tour in French covering the class’ recent vocabulary and grammar topics.

• an introduction to Simultaneous Interpreting and group oral/interpreting exercises in one of our Digital Interpreting Suites with Andrew Simpson

• a Q & A session with current undergraduate students about University Life

• an afternoon session of Computer Aided Language Learning and video creation in one of our Digital Language Labs.

The visiting pupils worked on Translation and Interpreting (T&I) with Andrew Simpson and his T&I students Lixin Gui, Haoxiongyi Mei and Yiling Kimm; and on French Studies with Thomas Snell and his student team: Hannah Croft, Amy Wilcox, Amanda Spenceley, Naiomi Green, and Daniella Wood.
